Diggy Simmons Returning to ‘grown-ish’ as a Series Regular & Performing at 2019 Freeform Summit: Exclusive

Diggy Simmons will return to Freeform’s grown-ish as a series regular, and to celebrate, he will perform at the network’s second annual Freeform Summit on Wednesday.

Simmons will join previously announced performers Sofia Carson and Trevor Jackson at the all-day event at Hollywood’s Goya Studios. As for Freeform’s black-ish spin-off grown-ish, the actor/rapper will return as Doug, the fan-favorite boyfriend of Chloe Bailey’s character Jazz.

“I’m thrilled to be joining as a series regular on grown-ish and to see Doug become an even bigger part of the close-knit gang,” Simmons tells Billboard. “We left off the spring finale with some tension with Doug and Jazz’s relationship, but I’m so excited to see where the story goes. To celebrate becoming an even bigger part of the grown-ish fam, I’ll be performing a medley of songs at the Freeform Summit including ‘Goin,’ which is produced by Kaytranada. I’m excited to be a part of this event as both a performer and panelist, which celebrates giving a stage to everybody, no matter what race, gender, sexuality they love and are. The music I’m working on is very vulnerable, so it feels great to be able to celebrate that as we continue to tell these kinds of stories onscreen.”

In addition to his musical performance, Simmons will participate in a panel called “Why Won’t You Date Me? Attraction vs. Implicit Bias, On and Off Screen” to discuss the importance of diversifying love stories onscreen. The panel — which also includes EJ Johnson, Shaun Ross and more — is a part of the event’s “A Stage for Everyone” theme, which focuses on inclusion, representation and the ways young adults have pushed society to reevaluate its cultural norms.

grown-ish was recently renewed for a third season by the network. There’s no word yet when season 3 will premiere.
